A suspect was arrested today after an explosive device went off at a San Mateo high school, police said.
No one was hurt in the blast just after 8 a.m. at Hillsdale High School at 3115 Del Monte St. (links.sfgate.com/ZHZL), authorities said. Some students reported that the explosion happened outside a room where a sophomore history class was in session.
The school was evacuated, and classes canceled for the day.
The nature of the explosive device was not immediately known, San Mateo police Lt. Mike Brunicardi said. Officers from his agency were among police who descended on the campus, searching from classroom to classroom to see whether other bombs had been planted and to make sure everyone was evacuated.
The name of the male suspect was not immediately released, and police did not say what his motive might have been. Brunicardi said there apparently had been no phone warning to the school that a bomb would go off.
Students gave conflicting versions of what happened, but several said they had seen the suspect being tackled, possibly by teachers.
One student, Hongying Markowitz, compared the sound of the explosion to a "gunshot."
Among the law enforcement agencies on scene are police from San Mateo, Millbrae and Belmont, San Mateo County sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers.
Students were directed to the blacktop at nearby Abbott Middle School at 600 36th Ave. Parents are being asked to meet at the middle school and pick up students there.
Classes at the 1,200-student high school began last Monday.
